Mediums

A medium is the material, combined with pigment, to create paint.  It is also a formulation of compatible materials which are then added to the paint.  In oil painting these consist entirely of oils, resins, waxes and solvent.  In acrylic painting they comprise different formulations of the acrylic polymer (dipersion) and water.  Watercolor and gouache and kids tempra - gum arabic.  Tempera is based on eggyolk.  Distemper - glue.  Casein - milk.  Encaustic - wax.
