I am interested in the plein air exhibit for July. Could you fill in some of the details. I have been painting around Portland for the last year, so I have inventory. And if I'm in town for Bastille Day, I will joyfully join in the plein air convergence.

But my primary interest at the moment is getting into the July Plein air exhbit.

thanks, June

Tim's comment above is incorrect. I believe he was responding to our show by women of "that certain age" titled Crone. Almost as soon as the show went up we had a couple men inquire if we were going to have a show of artwork by male artists over 50 and I told them that, no, we had no plans to do a show by male artists over 50. The reason for that was because we have a significant group of women artists who have come to painting late in life, after raising families, or having careers, and they seemed to be a particularly passionate, focused group of artists who had an interesting story to tell, and the men of that same age group - at least those who do shop in our store - seem to have a completely different background and history. While I am sure that many of those men do interesting, compelling work, they do not seem to have the same collective spirit as the women we encountered, and as such, do not present as much interest for a group show.

It is always difficult to try and appease all the diverse parties who are interested in showing on our wall, and as we do only 12 shows a year, and as we give employees a priority for showing, there are very few opportunities to show individual works. To be more democratic, we have tried to add more group shows - we have a plein air group show coming up in July, and a political themed group show in November, and I can assure you that many manly men will be showing during those months, and it is very unlikely that we will reject any work that meets the stated criteria of those shows.

In our defense, we have also shown plenty of work by men in the past two years, including solo shows by Kelly McCarty, Kentree Spiers, Michael Endo, Dan Giacometti, and Christopher Bibby, to name a few.

There can be little debate that women have been given the short end of the stick when it comes to gallery shows and representation over the course of history. If we have made a tiny effort to reverse this discrimination, then we have done so unapologetically. We have also made a concerted effort to include as many diverse individuals as our small wall will allow. While I am sure that our curatorial efforts are not appreciated by everyone, I am proud of the work we have shown, and I believe it has been representative of a wider range of individuals than you will see in any commercial gallery in our fair city.

Quin,
we currently have a couple of our large, plein air umbrellas in stock. We'll increase our inventory as we get closer to the summer months and we usually have several on hand through the season. Thanks for the reminder!

Hello, I was wondering about getting some of your Utrecht Plein Air Umbrellas in your store. With the number of plein air painters in this area, not to mention your event, I think they'd be quite popular.

Yes! The show is open to any Utrecht customer who would like to display a landscape painting executed outdoors in the tradition of plein air painting. If you'd like to join us for our outdoor group painting event come and talk to us and we'll keep you posted on the dates.
